Cleary's books have earned her many prestigious awards, including the American Library Association's Laura Ingalls Wilder Award, presented to her in recognition of her lasting contribution to children's literature. And so, the Klickitat Street gang was born! She based her funny stories on her own neighborhood experiences and the sort of children she knew. When a young boy asked her, "Where are the books about kids like us?" she remembered her teacher's encouragement and was inspired to write the books she'd longed to read but couldn't find when she was younger. Before long, her school librarian was saying that she should write children's books when she grew up. But by third grade, after spending much time in her public library in Portland, Oregon, she found her skills had greatly improved. ![]() As a child, she struggled with reading and writing. It spurs me to continually reflect on and reevaluate the role of digital technology in my life, and to tweak that role to maximize its upsides and minimize its downsides. This reading gives me a more birds-eye view on things. ![]() In the day-to-day press of life, it’s hard to keep these kinds of questions at the top of one’s mind, and more importantly, to take action based on their answers.įor that reason, I’ve found it beneficial to read at least one book a year about the intersection of digital technology and life - i.e., individuality, psychology, culture, and every other aspect of existence that tech touches. What is the technology giving us? What is it taking away from us? Are we losing more to it than we’re gaining? Are there ways to tip that equation more in our favor? The connection is so intimate, so undeviating, that it’s hard to get real perspective on the relationship between ourselves and our devices.
